Classic Bike Festival Ireland

This particular photo was taken on my first visit to Dundrod, and it shows the podium of the 1977 350 Ulster GP.
I could be a very poor loser, particularly if I thought I had not performed up to my own expectations, and this was one of those occasions. I had stalked off back to my pit after the race, and I was sitting in my caravan sulking when Tom Herron appeared at the door. “What are you doing? The rostrum celebrations are about to start, so stop feeling for yourself and get your ass down to the podium so that the fans can get a look at your ugly mug” , he said. With that, he turned around and marched off.
It is only now in hindsight that I realize my ride that day must have been pretty damn decent, considering the quality of two guys who beat me. After all, Tom Herron and Ray McCullough, or Supermac as he was known, are still considered as two of the very best to grace the road racing scene in Ireland.
